New Jersey Medical Malpractice Lawsuits

Parker Waichman LLP has helped numerous people pursue medical malpractice lawsuits against doctors and other healthcare professionals whose mistakes or negligence caused injuries. Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are obligated to treat sick and injured people to the best of their ability. Sadly, this does not always happen. One landmark report published in 1999 by the Institute of Medicine showed that hospital errors kill 98,000 patients a year. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), medical negligence is the third leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease and cancer.

Worst Hospital Rating

New Jersey MedicalA survey conducted by the Leapfrog Group, a healthcare research group, analyzed the likelihood of medical malpractice mistakes to occur in New Jersey hospitals. David Knowlton, president of the Health Care Quality Institute of New Jersey, indicated that the survey was conducted due to inadequate patient care over the years. "The Leapfrog Group board has been frustrated with the lack of progress in improving patient safety, despite significant industry efforts over the past decade," he said to "It is time for a game changer. It’s time to give American families the heads-up they need to protect themselves if they face the need for a hospital stay."

Overall, 24 percent of New Jersey’s 71 hospitals received a C; Leapfrog Group wouldn’t give a grade lower than a C so the two hospitals that would have gotten the worst rating—Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro and Hoboken University Medical Center—were given a “grade pending.” The list of New Jersey hospitals that received a “C” grade include:

•    Bayonne Medical Center (Bayonne)
•    Centrastate Healthcare System (Freehold)
•    Chilton Memorial Hospital (Pompton Plains)
•    Capital Health Mercer Campus (Trenton)
•    Cooper Health System (Camden)
•    Hackettstown Regional Medical Center (Hackettstown)
